In Exodus 16 and 17, God provided bread from heaven (manna) and water from a rock.
The people of Israel ate the manna forty years, till they came to a habitable land. They ate the manna till they came to the border of the land of Canaan. (Exodus 16:35)
The manna ceased the day after they ate of the produce of the land (of Canaan). And there was no longer manna for the people of Israel, but they ate of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.
God led you through the great and terrifying wilderness… where there was no water, and brought you water out of the flinty rock, (Deuteronomy 8:15)
But God provided more than food and drink for the Israelites as they wandered in the wilderness for 40 years.
God went before you … in fire by night and in the cloud by day, to show you what way you should go. (Deuteronomy 1:33)
So God provide direction; he guided them. I’ve also heard that the cloud would have provided shade during the day, and the fire would have provided warmth during the nights.
But God did even more.
Your clothing did not wear out on you and your feet did not swell these forty years. (Deuteronomy 4:8)
