Leviticus 24 – Eye for an Eye

In Leviticus 24 we learned about the continual light, the holy bread and the law of “an eye for an eye.”

(Summarized)

The Lord (to Moses, saying): Command the children of Israel:

Continual Light: Bring pure oil olive to cause the lamps on the pure candlestick to burn before the Lord continually, outside the veil of the testimony, from the evening until the morning before the Lord continually: it shall be a statute forever in your generations.

The Holy Bread: Take fine flour, and bake twelve cakes and set them in two rows, six on a row, on the pure table before the Lord, that it may be on the bread for a memorial, even an offering made by fire unto the Lord. Every sabbath he shall set it in order before the Lord continually. And it shall be Aaron’s and his sons’; and they shall eat it in the holy place: for it is most holy to him of the offerings of the Lord made by fire by a perpetual statute, an everlasting covenant.

Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan, had a son whose father was an Egyptian. The son strove together with a man of Israel in the camp. The son blasphemed the name of the Lord and cursed.

The people brought him to Moses.

They put him in ward that the mind of the Lord might be shown to them.

The Lord (to Moses): Bring him that has cursed outside the camp; and let all that heard him lay their hands on his head, and let all the congregation stone him.

Tell the children of Israel:

Whoever curses his God shall bear his sin. He that blasphemes the name of the Lord, he shall be put to death, and all the congregation shall stone him: whether he is a foreigner or born in the land.

He that kills any man shall be put to death.

He that kills a beast shall make it good; beast for beast.

If a man cause a blemish in his neighbor; as he has done, so it shall be done to him; breach for breach, eye for eye, tooth for tooth: as he has caused a blemish in a man, so shall it be done to him.

One manner of law for one of your own country as well as for the foreigner: for I am the Lord your God.

Moses (to the children of Israel): Bring him that cursed outside of the camp and stone him with stones.

And the children of Israel did as the Lord commanded Moses.
